Notary public services are generally available on weekdays during normal business hours at our Mahwah office. Because the notary may not always be available, appointments are required. Please call ahead or schedule an appointment before visiting.

What Is a Notary Public?

Important Notary Service Guidelines

• Notary services are available by appointment only.
• The notary must be present and able to communicate directly with the person requesting notarization.
• Each signer must personally appear before the notary, unless a properly authorized remote or electronic notarization process has been confirmed in advance.
• A valid government-issued identification document is required, such as a driver’s license, state ID card, passport, or other acceptable government-issued identification.
• The name on the identification should reasonably match the name on the document being notarized.
• Documents must be complete before notarization. Documents with blank spaces may be declined.
• Do not sign the document before your appointment unless you are specifically instructed that the document only requires acknowledgment of a prior signature.
• Only documents in English are generally accepted.
• Only original documents, certified copies, or documents otherwise acceptable under applicable notary rules can be notarized.
• DCS staff cannot act as witnesses for your document.
• If witnesses are required, you must bring the required witnesses with you. Witnesses must also bring acceptable government-issued identification.

Current Notary Fees

Standard New Jersey notary fees are charged in accordance with applicable New Jersey notary rules. The standard fee for many common notarial acts, including acknowledgments, oaths, affidavits, and proofs of deed, is $2.50 per notarial act.

Different fee limits may apply to certain real estate transfer or mortgage financing transactions. Please call ahead if your document is connected to a real estate closing, mortgage, deed, estate matter, court filing, or other time-sensitive legal transaction.

Payment is accepted by cash or certified check unless other arrangements are confirmed before the appointment.

Remote or Electronic Notarization

Older emergency rules related to COVID-19 are no longer the basis for routine notary services. Remote and electronic notarization are now governed by current state notary laws and registration requirements.

DCS primarily offers in-person notary services at our Mahwah, NJ office. If you need a remote or electronic notarization, please call first to confirm whether that service is currently available and whether your document is eligible.

Some documents may not be accepted for remote or electronic notarization by the receiving party, even if remote notarization is legally available. Before requesting a remote or electronic notarization, confirm acceptance with the organization, agency, court, lender, title company, attorney, or other party that will receive the document.

Documents We May Not Be Able to Notarize

The notary may decline service when the document, signer, identification, request, or surrounding circumstances raise questions about identity, capacity, willingness, completeness, authenticity, ambiguity, or legal sufficiency.

Examples of situations where notary service may be declined include:

• The signer does not have acceptable identification.
• The signer does not appear to understand the document or appears unwilling to sign.
• The document contains blank spaces or incomplete sections.
• The signature does not reasonably match the identification presented.
